Morning Report: 07.45 London

This morning, the pressure on financial markets has continued after ratings agencies sliced through the ratings of several Spanish banks. The Asian session saw more heavy selling as did the late evening US session. European stock markets are set for another bumpy open. After months, years of putting off the inevitable, it now seems that markets and political leaders are having to face the reality of a Greek euro exit. While we may not be past the event horizon yet, it is far too close to comfort.

The dollar index has resumed its upwards bias, but without its previous trajectory.

The standout fallers are the higher yielding currencies of the Australian and New Zealand dollars. The NZD/USD is continuing its specular slump since April with the pair down 1.16%. The AUD/JPY and AUD/USD are both down around 0.95%.

The euro itself is trading lower, though some way off the selling experience by the New Zealand dollar. The EUR/USD and EUR/JPY are down around 0.23%.

The British pound is also falling by a similar margin. The GBP/USD has fallen spectacularly throughout May, with the sell off accelerating in the last two days following the Bank of England’s downgrade of its UK growth forecasts.

Gold is falling back slightly after yesterday’s big rally.

While the US dollar index is looking like it might be running too hot, the Japanese yen may have further space to run as investors seek out safe havens. This could extend the downside on high trending pairs such as the AUD/JPY.

A good way to play this might be a LOWER trade predicting that the AUD/JPY trades closes below 77.50 in 3 days time for a potential return of 159%.

Afternoon Report: 17.30

This morning markets looked as though they had built a stable platform for a rally, but this has been washed away as the euro panic returns. There is a very real risk of a run on Spanish banks with shares in Bankia, Spain’s 4th largest bank dropping by 29% today alone. Stock markets have been hit hard with the SP 500 down around 1% so far.

There are some interesting moves afoot today with investors switching their preferred safe haven from the US dollar to the Japanese yen after the US Philly Fed index came in well below estimates. The USD/ JPY is down 1.32%, exaggerating moves on other yen pairs and containing the sell off on the dollar pairs.

The biggest mover today is gold, which has has rallied 2.49% to $1575 as traders swap their dollars for other assets.

While the euro region is hitting the headlines, its the British pound that his being singled out for punishment. The GBP/ USD is down 0.64%, while the EUR/ USD is down just 0.14%. The GBP/ JPY is the biggest faller today aside from gold, down 1.92%.

Morning Report: 08.00 London

This morning financial markets have a mild positive bias following better than expected Japanese GDP figures. Gold has been the biggest gainer so far, rallying 0.60% in early trading. Today is potentially the first significant rally for the precious metal since the end of April.

The euro is stable, without making significant gains. It continues to show relative strength against the British pound with the EUR/ GBP up 0.15%. The pound is flat this morning, after two major sell offs in the last two days.

The higher yielding Australian and New Zealand dollar are leading the gainers with the AUD/ USD and NZD/ USD up 0.35% and 0.28% respectively. The NZD/ USD is the worst performing pair over the last 30 days.

The dollar index is still looking overbought in the short term, but choosing the right pair to play could be problematic. Gold may be the best option for this. While Europe is a big unknown, support does seem to be holding in the $1515 to $1550 region.

A good way to play this might be a HIGHER trade predicting that Gold closes above $1575 in 7 days time for a potential return of 247%.

It’s been a mixed afternoon on financial markets with pressure generally easing on the euro area. It’s not been a uniformly positive day though with the pound weakening in the wake of the Bank of England downgrading its UK growth forecasts. The GBP/ USD is down 0.44% with the EUR/ GBP up 0.39%.

Better than expected US economic data has helped lift the gloom in some areas, but a notable exception has been the Canadian dollar, with the USD/ CAD up 0.41%. This is certainly down from the day’s highs, but the pair has rallied significantly off the lowest set earlier this afternoon.

Morning Report: 08.15 London

This morning, the euro crisis continues to put pressure on financial markets with ‘risk on’ assets selling off throughout the Asian session. By contrast, the US dollar continues to benefit from its safe haven status and is heading to its highest levels since November 2011.

This dollar strength is impacting the dollar pairs and gold. The latter is now close to testing its 12 month lows around $1515. The yen too is a haven of sorts, but its no match for the dollar, with the USD/JPY is rising for the second day.

The euro itself continues to sell off, with the EUR/USD falling 0.32%. The euro doesn’t appear to be subject to isolated selling though with the EUR/GBP flat on the day.

The higher risk/ higher yielding pairs are the biggest movers this morning, with the NZD/USD down 0.48% and the AUD/USD off by 0.42%.

The Canadian dollar has been hit hard lately, with the USD/CAD rising strongly this morning. Such extreme weakness is quite unusual for Canadian dollar which is highly correlated with the US dollar.

The recent US dollar strength is reaching overbought levels, which could translate into an easing of the pressure on the USD/CAD.

A good way to play this might be a LOWER trade predicting that the USD/CAD closes below 1.0050 in 12 days time for a potential return of 164%.

This is presented as an idea to stimulate fixed odds financial betting ideas and is not financial advice.

Afternoon Report: 18.30

The day started well for the euro – “Well” being a relative terms when French GDP growth is flat and Italian GDP worsening. Things got worse as the day drew on though with German and European ZEW economic sentiment coming in below estimates. The real bombshell was the news that Greece would be holding fresh elections, which increases the probability of a euro exit. On top of this, there were calls in Italy renegotiate Italy’s budget targets. Although this is just talk at the moment, it strikes at the heart of the issue – that what happens to Greece and how Greece is treated will have a knock on effect in how far other troubled nationals reject austerity and veer away from much needed structural reforms.

The euro has been hit hard today, with the EUR/ USD down 0.50%.

It’s not been a uniformly risk off day though, with other currencies falling further than the euro and some currencies even rising today. The NZD/ USD has been hardest hit, while the AUD/ USD and AUD/ JPY are in positive territory for the day.

The British pound has been suffering with the GBP/ USD off by 0.51% following worse than expected trade balance figures.

The US dollar index is having another strong day as traders hunt for safe havens on the back of poor US CPI and retail sales data. The dollar’s strength has pushed the USD/ JPY up 0.46%.

Is this morning’s Aussie rally the start of a turnaround, or simply traders covering profits on their short trades? It’s very hard to say what is going on right now, but with the questions in Europe still remaining unanswered, a downside trade could be the better option on the AUD/USD.

Afternoon Report: 18.00

This afternoon, demand for German bond’s (Bunds) has soared as investor seek out safe havens in Europe. By contrast Spanish bond yields have rocketed as traders fret over a smorgasbord of European worries. First we have the uncertainty surrounding Greek elections, though there is a general expectation that leaders will not want to rock the boat too much. Of greater concern is the continued pressure on Spanish banks which are being artificially propped up by the ECB. While this mechanism is providing unlimited liquidity, the Spanish banks are fast running out of capital to put up as collateral. In addition European industrial production numbers came in well below estimates.

Running in the background, there are also continued concern’s about JP Morgan’s trading losses. The dollar index trades higher when traders hunt out safer havens and this is what we’re seeing today.

The euro is being punished across the board, and this weakness is best seen in the EUR/ GBP pair.

Gold is also continuing to slide, further proof that the precious metal has become more of a speculation tool than a safe haven in recent months.

Typical of a Monday morning, financial markets are yet to get going so far. The early bias is for further weakness, but so far the selling pressure is mild. The dollar index has reached its highest level since March, while stock markets look like they will struggle at the open.

The pound is continuing to show some relative strength this morning with the EUR/GBP falling 0.29%. This seems to be more a function of euro weakness than pound strength with the EUR/USD down 0.25% as the pair heads for levels not seen since January. John Mauldlin has some excellent analysis out in his recent newsletter (H/T Marketbeat) “Will it buy time? Yes, but time for what? To fix government deficits? To deal with bank debts? Sovereign debt? To somehow solve the massive trade imbalances between Germany and the European periphery? To force voters to accept a fiscal union? In the midst of a crisis? If there is some conspiratorial cabal that has a secret plan, they have kept it well hidden. Because from here it looks like they are making up the “plan” as they go along. Their actual intentions are no secret. They will do whatever it takes to keep the European Union and eurozone together. And whatever it takes is a very open-ended plan. But it is going to cost them trillions of euros”.

The NZD/USD has resumed its trending bias, this time to the downside. The economic outlook remains uncertain, but the odds favour a continuation of the NZD/USD down move.

A good way to play this might be a LOWER trade predicting that the NZD/USD closes below 0.7775 in 1 days time. This could return 147% if successful.

This morning, markets have resumed their downtrend after some disappointing data from China overnight. Chinese PPI, fixed asset investment industrial production all came in below estimates. In the UK, Nationwide consumer confidence also fell below estimates. Banking stocks have also come under pressure following JP Morgan’s admission that a single trader has been allowed to rack up billions of pounds of losses.

Gold is the biggest mover, as the US dollar index continues its upwards trajectory.

The euro is down, but so far this seems to be more a function of the general sell off than any new specific news. It does send the EUR/USD towards new lows.

The trend following AUD/USD is heading for new lows which creates an opportunity. The pair is just above parity, a level not reached since December. If the 1.0000 level breaks, there could be a short sharp move lower with follow up selling.

A good way to play this might be a LOWER trade predicting that the AUD/USD closes below 0.9950 in 5 days time for a potential return of 217%
